What Do the Numbers and Letters on Plastic Bottles and Containers Mean?

PET or PETE

This is probably one of the most commonly used plastic for water and soft drink bottles. What you should remember about this type of bottle is that it is intended for single use. Hence, do not reuse this bottle because it increases the risk of leaching and bacterial growth. Moreover, repeated use will release heavy metals and chemicals that have a negative impact on the hormonal balance.

HDP or HDPE

This type of plastic is usually used for milk jugs, detergent and oil bottles, toys, and some plastic bags. This is considered to be the safest plastic because it doesn’t release harmful chemicals.

PVC or 3V

This kind of plastic is quite soft and flexible. Clear plastic food wrapping, cooking oil bottles, teething rings, blister packaging for myriad products, and children’s and pets’ toys are usually made of this bottle. However, remember that this plastic releases two toxic chemicals, which can be detrimental to the hormones. So, if you can, avoid this kind of plastic.

LDPE

This kind of plastic doesn’t release any chemicals, but it cannot be used for bottles. What you should know is that you shouldn’t buy food which is packed in this plastic. Moreover, this kind of plastic may contain highly dangerous chemicals and some syrups and yogurt are packed in this plastic. You shouldn’t reuse it for the long term.

PC or Non-Labeled Plastic

This kind of plastic is usually used for sports water bottles and food containers. It is considered to be the most dangerous kind of plastic because the chemicals it contains can leak into food or drink products.
