There Is Real Honey and Fake Honey – How To Check The Purity Of Honey?
Honey is one of the healthiest foods which comes with a wide range of health benefits. Its sweet taste is gained from the monosaccharides fructose and glucose. Honey is packed with calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and selenium. Moreover, it is a natural source of carbohydrates which provide strength and energy to our bodies.
However, what you probably didn’t know is that not all honey is the same. In fact, most of the honey in the supermarkets is fake. The fake honey isn’t any healthier than white sugar and it has been added glucose, dextrose, molasses, sugar syrup, invert sugar, flour, corn syrup, starch, or any other similar product, other than floral nectar.
Hence, the next time you buy honey, before consuming it you should check its purity. We decided to show you several methods on how to check whether the honey you buy is real or fake.
Methods to Detect Fake Honey
Label Information
Make sure you always read the label. So, if there is noted that the honey contains added glucose or high fructose corn syrup, the honey is fake.
Taste Test
The taste of the honey can also show you its purity. Hence, if it tastes like flowers or herbs it’s real honey. On the other hand, if the taste stays for awhile, the honey is fake and the taste remains as a result of the added sugar.
The Thumb Test
This is another great method. Simply, put a small drop of the honey on your thumb. If the honey spills or spreads around, it is not pure. The pure honey will stay intact on your thumb.
Iodine Test
In order to perform the iodine test, you should add a few drops of iodine to a glass of water and then add some honey. Then, if the honey turns blue, it has been combined with corn starch and it is fake.
Flame Test
You should remember that organic honey is flammable. Hence, the matchsticks light even and easily after they have been immersed in pure honey.
Dissolving Method
This is another great test. All you should do is place a spoon of honey in a glass of water. The fake honey will dissolve in water and you will see it around the glass. On the other hand, pure honey will sink to the bottom of the glass.
